工业系统工程学专业的目的在于，通过设计、构建、运营和改善生产产品或服务的生产系统来提高系统生产率和效率。因此，通过各方面的教育和研究，帮助学生具备有效设计并运营生产系统的工程师能力和分析•企划•经营生产系统的经营者能力。该专业主要培养向信息化、地区化和世界化发展且具备符合产业趋势的工程师和经营者能力的人才。
