数学大致分为以数字运算为基础的代数学(algebra)、以函数为基础理解数学对象的解释学(analysis)、就空间的结构等问题进行研究的拓扑学(topology),以及将这些结果适用于其他领域的应用数学(applied mathematics)。可是这些领域之间保持着互补而有机的联系,因此连一个领域也不得疏忽。这是一个以严格逻辑为生命的领域,学生不知不觉地也喜欢使用严格且犀利的逻辑体系,并培养通过数学分析和解释来说明自然现象本质的习惯和能力。
